Signs Of Pain In Cats And Dogs

01/04/2019

Although they have been domesticated for a very long time, cats and dogs instinctively try to conceal any signs of pain. It is a trait that they have inherited from their ancestors who have to develop skills to survive in the wild. Thus, there are pet owners who are unable to spot any signs of pain as their pets try their best to show any signs of weakness and vulnerability. Symptoms of pain differ significantly between cats and dogs. Cats that are in pain may lose their appetite, hide, become withdrawn and quiet, appear agitated, pant, and display aggressive behavior or distinct changes in personality. They may favor a painful area by limping or won't allow anyone to touch an area that is painful. Although some cats may howl or cry when in severe pain, most cats suffer from pain don't engage in the behavior. When in pain, some dogs may remain stoic and hardly show signs of pain, however, there are those that show more distinct signs like vocalizing, whining, whimpering, panting, limping, agitation, aggressive behavior, appetite loss, standing with an arched back, or hiding and becoming withdrawn.

Any sudden changes in your pet's health and/or behavior should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian Crown Point, IN.
