Nail Trimming for Dogs

12/12/2018

Are your dog's nails getting long? One of the first signs of nails in need of a trim is excessive scratching or scraping on the ground and even dragging of the feet. If it's time for a trim, you can schedule an appointment with you groomer, have your vet do it or trim the nails yourself. If you trim the nails yourself always have styptic powder on hand in case you cut too close to the quick of the nail or vein in the nail. If this does happen, your dog will start bleeding. Don't panic. Compress the area around the nail for at least two minutes using a paper towel or cloth. Apply styptic powder to the wound. If you don't have any, use corn starch or flour. Compress the wound until the bleeding stops. If it doesn't look like it's going to stop, call your Plano, TX veterinary clinic for further assistance. Learn more here.
