Degenerative Myelopathy in Large Dogs

11/12/2018

If you own a large breed dog like the German Shepherd, Burmese Mountain Dog, or even Standard Poodle then you have heard of a genetic health condition that can affect large dogs. In fact, there are a few genetic conditions that affect larger dogs, but one of the more widely known is DM or Degenerative Myelopathy. This is an incurable disease that attacks the nerves and spinal cord. It can cause lack of mobility and eventual numbness of loss of feeling in the legs completely. It is most often seen in large breed dogs although it can also occur in smaller breeds. Signs of DM generally occur later in a dog's life and include immobility in the backend or hind limbs. It may appear as arthritis at first but could quickly worsen. If your dog has mobility trouble, call your vets Frisco, TX and have him check your dog to determine the exact causes.
